Inspiration & Process - Loon Lake Cottage

We recently completed a project on one of the most peaceful and serene lakes we have experienced in Maine, and we really wanted to capture that same quality inside. When you look out at the lake the overwhelming feeling is of serenity. Our goal was really to bring that feeling inside. We loved the concept of green & blue combining in the space - as seen in the view of the lake.

In our initial design proposals, we modeled the main living space in 3D to show how layout & furniture scale. We also wanted to show how the millwork colors worked together in an open space.

In some of the initial renderings we had been exploring lighter blues, but realized we wanted to bring the depth & saturation out a bit more in the living room - and pushed that blue color further. We also like the use of a darker paint color where there is a TV mount - as it hides the stark contrast of the wall and a dark TV.

For the bathrooms we wanted to keep things really neutral and light and serene. Using varied whites, light woods, and playing with texture was important to keep things still interesting.

The soapstone we sourced ended up having some of the most incredible veining we’ve seen.  This really speaks to the rocky elements of the lake. We strategically laid out the templating to highlight some of the larger veins - such as the sink apron and range backsplash. We loved how the dark stone contrasted the green cabinets, and really brought the earthy tones of the green out. The cabinets were painted in Farrow & Ball Lichen Green, which has nice blue undertones - to pick up on the adjacent blue millwork.

We were so thrilled with how this project came out - and you can really sense the integration of the adjacent landscape with the interiors.
