Project - Behind the Scenes - Ski Condo
We recently completed a ski condo renovation at Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry Maine. This was a smaller project in square footage, but had lots of components - from gut renovating 3 existing bathrooms, 2 kitchenettes, creating a brand new bathroom, and replacing all the furnishings and lighting throughout.
Here are some before images to show the original condition (the owners bought it fully furnished). As you can see it felt quite dated, and dark. Our goal was to open it up - showcase the views of the mountain & ski slopes, and make everything feel updated and fresh.
We created mood boards for both condo units, for each main space to show our design intent and general inspiration for the space. We leaned into darker wintery colors, plaids, leathers, and textured woods to really enhance the connection to the winter landscape. Trying to be cognizant of cost, we kept the general layouts for most spaces such as keeping the existing plumbing locations everywhere - just really maximizing the available space.
With the condo units being smaller, we wanted to keep the color palettes really cohesive throughout - to give the feeling of a well connected flow. For example in the owner’s unit, we utilized the same color green - Farrow and Ball’s Green smoke in many places - the kitchen cabinets, dining area millwork, the upstairs bunk color, and upstairs bathroom walls. Having the color repeat throughout connects the spaces visually in a nice subtle way.
As you can see in the inspiration images above, we were inspired by high end ski storage areas often found in ski resorts. This was the inspiration for using metal mesh in some of the millwork - which provides a fun unique component to the kitchen. Since the kitchen is mainly used as a rental, we knew that we could have more open cabinets and not worry about things getting too messy inside. Banker Wire is a great resource for custom metal mesh - with lots of different styles and finishes.

A few unique features of the project include all custom designed kitchens, with special touches like natural oak shelves, oak counters, and wire mesh cabinet inserts.. New appliances in a dark finish create a cohesive flow from the cabinetry colors.
We sourced custom bunk beds, with finishes to tie into the colors throughout. The clients wanted to provide as many sleeping options as possible upstairs - so creative configurations of bunks came into play.
We installed one of our favorite wallcoverings from Phillip Jeffries, which is evocative of birch bark, to tie in all the birch trees found throughout the mountain.
Lastly, we were able to slightly modify an existing bathroom layout to create a perfect spot for Kohler’s wall mounted trough style sink - which provides a fun visual, as well as functional two faucet option for multiple guests staying in the bunk space.
